A VIEW FROM THE CHAIR

The Desert Sage Vol. 237

This is the last column I will write as your chair. I want to thank all of you for your support and I particularly want to thank the other members of the Management Committee both personally and on behalf of the whole Section. Greg Roach Vice Chair and Outings, Mirna Roach Secretary, Patty Kline Programs, and of course Linda McDermott Treasurer who will be our new Chair. Thanks also to John McCully as Editor of the Sage, Julie Rush as Council Representative, Ron Bartell for Membership, Barbee Tidball Conservation, Harry Freimanis for Outreach, Ron Jones Safety, Dave Jurasevich Peak Guides, and Bill t. Russell our Archivist Historian and finally to the Mountaineering Committee chaired by Greg Roach with Erik Siering and Bill T. Russell.

What a great year! Vic Henney and Sue Wyman both finished the list on Glass on September 18th for the second time and on the day before Sue became the forth woman to be a triple list finisher finishing the SPS list on Morrison. Since the last banquet fifteen other members have completed the list for the first time starting with Bill Stevens on June 18th on Waucoba. Tina Stough became the third woman to be a triple list finisher seven days later on Mt. Humphreys. Tom Moumblow finished on Ruby Mountain on July 2nd and on the next day Bob Wyka did it on Wheeler Mountain. As the Sierra season waned the pace picked up again on November 19th with Greg and Mirna Roach's double finish on Spirit Mountain and then two weeks later Erik Siering finished on Little Picacho with an intrepid group of eighteen climbers. Suzanne and Igor Mamadalen finished on McCullough on December 17th amid a great crowd of climbers and dogs and much rejoicing. Our friends from San Diego started the new year with Terry Flood finishing on Orocopia on January 14th and Dennis Richards on Old Dad on February 11th. Two weeks later it was my turn and I finished on East Ord in my original state. Wynne Benti-Zdon finished on Chuchwalla on March 26th and finally George Toby and Ron Young, ice axes in hand, finished on Waucoba with sixteen friends on April 29th. George tells me that they ran into quite a bit of snow with very strong winds on top. When they got back to camp it rained and then in a suitable ending to a memorable year of list finishes the sun came out with a rainbow.

I have learned a lot of things as your Chair this year. I would like to tell you that for me the most important is that the DPS is strong because we are strong. The Section has been around for over half a century because we love to climb mountains, which takes strength and gives us strength, not just of the body but most of all of the spirit. As I write this I think how well these words the fit friends who left us this year, Ursala Slager and Vi Grasso.
