A VIEW FROM THE CHAIR

The Desert Sage Vol. 236

On Sunday February 26th, with more than fifty of you there I finished the DPS list on East Ord. Almost four years ago in April of 1991 I climbed Rabbit alone not knowing that it was my first DPS peak. I didn't even know the DPS existed. I had gone there during a difficult time in my life in search of solace. The irony is that journey I began that day to be alone has filled my life with so many of you. I want to take this opportunity to thank all of you who I have met along the way that have helped me reach this goal.

This is turning into a very vital season with the desert green with rains and the Section alive with a record number of list finishes, new members, and new ideas. Through the hard work of Harry Freimanis, our Outreach Coordinator, not only are our new brochures in sport stores all over Los Angeles and Orange County but Harry has also been working with the WTC getting the word to students, not only with literature, but also with our leaders speaking to them in their classes. We've been discussing with the SPS and HPS some of the things we have in common. Harry is already Outreach Coordinator for the DPS and SPS and he has offered his services to HPS. One of the first projects that we are looking into is the possibility of forming of a permanent archive of the climbing sections.

On March 11th Maris Valkass will lead Kofa from Palm Canyon assisted by me. This will be our first restricted climb under the new insurance. Maris also tells me that there will be a celebration of the Desert Protection Act labeled "The Ultimate Desert Experience" at the new Joshua Tree National Park on April 8th and 9th at Indian Cove. There will be climbs, hikes, songs, and various dignitaries. For reservations send $5 to the Angeles Chapter Desert Committee, Sierra Club, 3345 Wilshire Blvd., LA 90010.

In closing I would like to ask all of you to vote in the upcoming election. Your participation is so important to the vitality of the Section. Karen Leonard is heading up the nominating committee with the help of Ron Hudson and Christine Mitchell and they are doing a great job of putting together a strong ballot.
