A VIEW FROM THE CHAIR

The Desert Sage Vol. 234

The DPS season is well under way again. "Where are you going over Thanksgiving?" "What's the road like into Porter?" "Is there snow on Waucoba?" We're all making plans and looking forward to another wonderful year of climbing.

On the conservation front the Desert Bill has finally passed. I still haven't figured out what all the implications for the section are, but I think anything that preserves and protects the fragile desert ecology can't be bad.

This has been a great year for list finishes. Since the banquet we have already had six list finishers. June we saw two with William G. Stevens on Waucouba and then Tina Stough who became the third woman triple list finisher on Humphreys. In July Tom Moumblow finished on Ruby Dome and Bob Wyka finished on Wheeler. September saw Sue and Vic Henney both finish the list for the second time on Glass the same weekend they became triple list finishers with their joint SPS finish on Morrison. Greg and Mirna Roach should finish on Spirit this November and Erik Siering is scheduled to finish in December on Little Picacho. Suzanne and Igor Mamedalin are also scheduled to finish in December on McCullough and Mountain Gods willing I may finish on East Ord in February on the Old Timers trip. Wynne Benti is shooting for April and there are rumors that George Toby and Ron Young will finish this spring on Waucouba. Whew!

The Old timers weekend will be on February 25th and 26th and besides East Ord on Sunday we'll climb Granite #1 on the Saturday. Immediate Past Chair Patty Kline will lead and I will assist. Aside from the potential list finish of mine on East Ord there will be a ceremonial return of the calf's leg Patty gave me at the banquet to Granite on Saturday. We will stay that night at Granite for a car camp with a big campfire, stories of the old days, and plenty of good cheer.

As to restricted trips, Maris Valkass will lead Kofa from Palm Canyon on March 11 assisted by me. Again, I hope more of our E rated leaders will consider scheduling Weaver's Needle, Baboquivari and Little Picacho.

In closing let us in the words of Doug Mantle "celebrate" the life of Vi Grasso our friend and DPS and SPS list finisher. Vi told me once that of all her climbs from the East Face of Whitney to the high snows of the Himalayas she was probably proudest of time she trailed a rope up Babo climbing it free. Vi, we will miss your spirit and your laughter.
