Echoes from the Chair

As your membership chair I am the person who inputs all these new names into the SPS members database. Since my report for the last ECHO I already have 15 new subscribers, 4 reinstatements, and one new active member. That is an increase in membership of 6%. On the same report I also have added 49 more members who are current for 1995 as Sustaining Members. I think that it is clear that not only is our membership growing but also that many of us are chipping in that extra few dollars when we send in our dues. From my perspective the SPS is not only alive and well, it’s growing in numbers with an active and committed membership.

Your Management Committee has been speaking with the Management Committees of both the DPS and the HPS on issues that the climbing sections have in common. The HPS has just made Harry Freimanis their Outreach Chair. Harry is now officially coordinating outreach for all three climbing sections. With the Angeles Chapter Schedule no longer being sent out for free outreach has become much more important to the Sections. Another issue we have been discussing is the Permanent Archives of the Climbing Sections. With the help of Bill T. Russell and Charlie Knapke I have been looking into how to make them a secure and meaningful reality. We would appreciate any ideas and help you can give us.

Another example of the vitality of the Section is the interest that Duane McRuer’s and Doug Mantle’s Rock and Snow checkouts for the Mountaineers List have spawned. Many of you will be at Mt. Rubidoux on March 25th for the Rock and at Meysan Lake on April 22-23 for the Snow.

Thanks are due to Ron Jones and Bill Oliver who are helping us celebrate our 40th Anniversary Year with two trips. The first is a re-creation of a climb of Deer Mountain on April 22-23 which was the first SPS trip ever that appeared in the Angeles Chapter Schedule. The second is trek on the Theodore Solomons Trail from July 22nd through the 29th with climbs of peaks along the way.

Among the many and varied climbs and activities on this season’s full schedule R. J. Secor and Fred Camphausen will against be putting together trail maintenance parties to work on the Shepards Pass Trail on May 20-21 and July 7-12. Harry Freimanis and Rob Talbert are conducting an advanced Navigation Noodle on May 21st sponsored jointly by the SPS and WTC.

Wayne Norman is planning for the July/August issue on the ECHO to be the 40th Anniversary issue so please help him out with articles, pictures, or whatever else you may have to share with the Section. Barbee Tiball is already making plans for the banquet so any relevant ideas, information or memorabilia should be sent to her.

Climb on.
